The UNESCO World Heritage listed Coal Mines Historic Site, is a 25 minute drive from Port Arthur. It was Tasmania's first operational mine, developed to limit the colony's dependence upon imported coal from NSW and serving as a place of punishment for convicts from Port Arthur. The mine was operational for over 40 years.
Today, the Coal Mines offer visitors the chance to discover the uncrowded ruins and Tasmania's convict history.
The Lime Bay State Reserve campground is flanked by crescent shaped beaches and sits on a sandy shelf just above the waterline with views across Norfolk Bay. The shady campsites are suitable for tents and caravans.
