From 1830 to 1877, about 12,500 convicts served sentences at what is now the World Heritage listed Port Arthur Historic Site. More than 30 of the 100+ original buildings dot the site, ranging from a large penitentiary, which was originally constructed as a flour mill and a roofless church built by convicts.
Passengers arriving at Port Arthur Historic Site on cruise ships are tendered to the jetty in the morning to explore the site as well as the wider region.

This isthmus is the reason Port Arthur was chosen as the site for a prison. The tiny strip of land was easily patrolled, few were able to swim and a line of dogs, tethered at short intervals, roused the soldiers if anyone tried to get by.
