More than 30 of the 100+ original buildings dot the site, ranging from a large penitentiary, which was originally constructed as a flour mill and a roofless church built by convicts.

This isthmus is the reason Port Arthur was chosen as the site for a prison. The tiny strip of land was easily patrolled, few were able to swim and a line of dogs, tethered at short intervals, roused the soldiers if anyone tried to get by.
